Greetings From the Board

By Kathy H. Blanton, CMF-Chair, Board of Governors

Wring Out the Old

No, it’s not a typo and you don’t need an eye exam. I believe that many of us and most assuredly many of our clients share the sentiment of wringing out the old 2009 with all its chaos, challenges and uncertainty. Personally, I want to know that what transpired in 2009 will never happen again. I want a new year that offers stability, purpose and hope. And I want to be able to see my clients working toward their dreams without fear. My guess is that you do, too.

As certified career services professionals, you were the ones “in the trenches” this past year offering an unprecedented amount of time, energy and resources to more people than you may have ever served in one year. I am extremely proud each time I’ve heard reports of how you met the challenges of this past year head-on in order to provide the highest quality of service to your clients. You are the best of the best and you have represented ICC International’s mission and values in an exceptional way. Thank you!

I am also amazed at the fact that during an extremely busy year, ICC International experienced significant growth in 2009 thanks to the hard work of a dedicated team of sponsors and application reviewers. During the year, scores of new applicants were certified by the Institute from Australia, Canada, Ireland, Lebanon, The United Arab Emirates, The United Kingdom and The United States. Our global presence is expanding and the Institute’s name and brand is becoming recognized as the world’s standard for experience, competence and integrity in the career services profession. Professionals in our field, even under extreme time constraints, are realizing the need to validate their expertise through ICCI certification.

You too can be a significant part of the continued growth of ICC International. During 2010, the Board will be launching several initiatives to further our progress but we need your involvement. I am asking each certificant to identify a colleague that is currently not certified by ICCI but who most likely meets the criteria to become certified through the Institute, and to encourage that colleague to begin the certification process. If you hold the designation of CMF, you are eligible to serve as a sponsor. This is an excellent way to assist your colleagues and members of your firm to strengthen their professional brand through completing the process.

Also, if you are interested in serving in a more formal way, we have several governing divisions and committees that we would be happy to have you join. Additionally, if you are interested in serving on the Board of Governors at some point, committee involvement is an excellent place to become familiar with the organizational leadership. Please contact me through the Institute’s management office: info@careercertification.org if you would like to get involved. I hope you will.

So, let’s wring out the old 2009 and ring in a fabulous 2010 for ICC International. Together, we can impact the world as we raise the profile of dedicated professionals globally, making them more marketable and empowered to build or maintain a lasting, successful career.

What’s going on with Career Professionals these days?

By Gale Gibbons, MSS, CMF

In today’s economy, business is good for many career professionals – what with outplacement and job search coaching – but there are fewer easy successes. Yes, many of our clients are “landing” jobs but it is taking longer, often lots longer, and some clients aren’t successful in their search. Other clients find themselves unhappily “stuck” in a position which is no longer a good fit, and there aren’t many alternatives out there for them.

We know about the stress our clients are experiencing, but what about the stress we encounter in our work? We are the ones who need to be realistic, and optimistic – even though circumstances and the environment might be discouraging. And when our clients struggle to achieve their goals, often through no fault of their own, it has an impact on us.

So – how do we career professionals take care of ourselves in these situations? How do we maintain a realistic and optimistic view for our clients, how do we find the energy to meet these challenges? And how do we pay attention to our own professional development?

To find answers to these questions, I consulted with career experts – several of my colleagues in the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the ACP. I asked them two questions - how are you taking care of yourself personally and how are you taking care of your own professional development during this stressful time.

For the personal “self care”, my experts are firm believers in healthy diet and exercise, especially outdoors. Making priorities and careful scheduling can reduce stress. And as always, maintaining a good work life balance and making time for friends and family are essential.

As far as working with anxious clients, being clear about our roles and boundaries in the early stages of the coaching relationship is important, so that both parties have realistic expectations for the process and possible outcomes.

Despite being so busy, my experts are making time for conferences, professional meetings, webinars and seminars, reading and researching career trends and developments. All these activities not only contribute to our own professional development but also promote achieving and maintaining ICC certification, the professional credential for career management professionals. Social networking continues to be a “hot topic”. Learning about this not only helps us serve our clients, but also helps us stay connected and visible in our field. My experts are confident that professional relationships through organizations such as ACP provide opportunities for critical networking and connecting with other professionals for new perspectives and insights, sharing and support.
